Board Statement on Supreme Court Rulings 2023
AEE Board of Directors Statement on Recent Supreme Court Rulings
As an international community of experiential educators and practitioners current events are often challenging to address. What events do we respond to since we are an international community? How do we respond? In what ways does this event impact our membership and our community?
The recent US Supreme Court rulings on Affirmative Action and LGBTQ+ Discrimination are recent examples of such events. Equal and equitable access to quality education, experiential or otherwise, is a right that should not be denied or limited. It is also our greatest tool in building a more just and equitable future.
The rejection of the affirmative action and LGBTQ+ rights cases serve as an important reminder that our work toward equity and justice is far from complete. As an organization, we will continue to stand firmly in support of and take action towards inclusive policies, practices, and initiatives that strive to dismantle systemic barriers and foster equal opportunities for all.
The revolutionary educator, bell hooks, is quoted as saying, “To build community requires vigilant awareness of the work we must continually do to undermine all the socialization that leads us to behave in ways that perpetuate domination.” On behalf of all of our members, member organizations, and our wider experiential community, AEE will continue to strive for and ensure a safe, diverse, and inclusive community of educators and practitioners. Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging Is unwavering.
